The problem is CDOs are rare, very expensive, answer only to the CEO, are equal to the other C-suite executives, and have the technical expertise to command and build a technical team to manage the collection, flow, and enhancement of the data. 

This rarity is further exacerbated by the fact that the need is never 50/50 leader/technologist. It varies through the first year and even meeting to meeting.

Its usually handed to Data Engineering, but it’s not really their job either. Companies now have the option of using CAN to augment your R&D data science team to do what they do best–invent, and give you the support and maintenance of the models needed to actually realize the predicted ROI.

Sometimes your problem needs more than just a model, it needs a whole custom software solution. Stategy & Vision

The experience and wisdom it takes to provide Strategy and Vision in data driven decision making or AI implementation isn’t cheap. In fact, a principal level data scientist, AI Engineer, or C-level Data Officer would likely be the most expensive person on your payroll. Finding them is hard, keeping them is impossible. After all, how do you handle only needing their high level skill  for a few weeks but not all the time? You can’t ask them to do menial tasks after designing a strategy for your entire company. Too expensive to hire full time, too valuable not to have them.

Staff Training

As companies start to embrace making data-driven decisions, the need for qualified people becomes more urgent. Instead of hiring a new data person, train from within. Training within is a great way to reward your best employees, and is significantly faster and less expensive than its alternative, hiring from outside.

CAN has developed skill based training for 1 (the ODSA) or for a group (corporate training). Either way, you get the skill and wisdom of CAN employees teaching your employees the necessary skillsets they need to be successful.

Many times in data science – after you have built a team, a process, and found talent, you need one of two things:

Both of these needs are extremely temporary. A Master Data Scientist is someone you need to help with strategy and vision, perhaps to help with an expert level crisis or conundrum. These Masters are extremely helpful, often knowing the answer or how to build something from experience. They are, however, so extremely expensive, you cannot keep them on payroll on the off chance you will need them at some point.

Just as important is the occasional need for a multitude of hours to be spent on tasks that are important, but menial in their execution. These tasks like overhauling a group of models because of a tech stack change, adding an additional column of data added to a hundred tables, or migrating your fleet of dashboards to a new software. These tasks could absolutely be carried out by your team, but your team are already busy doing regular data science work for the org.
